What are Bull Bars and What Do They Do?

The Australian Outback with its untamed kangaroo population led to unfortunate collisions between machines and animals and brought about the need for bull bars to protect the front end of vehicles.

Bull bars can be fitted to almost any vehicle. However, they seem to have predominantly found their home as part of the exterior make-up of 4x4s and SUVs. Unfortunately, we at Electronic Fitment Centre cannot assist with stopping kangaroos but we can fit your vehicle with a bull bar.

What are Bull Bars?

A bull bar is a specially designed bar that is attached to the front of a vehicle to protect vital engine components from damage in the event of a collision. Primarily made from steel, they are strong enough to withstand an impact from an animal. Bull bars are extremely sturdy as they are attached to the front bumper with welds or bolts. Some designs feature steps for easy engine access and others are built with lugs to accommodate accessories. Square, rectangular, or oval, there is a size and shape for almost all types of vehicles.

Why Would You Need a Bull Bar?

Here are some benefits that bull bars offer:

Vehicle Protection

Whether the trail you decide on is on tarred or gravel roads, it invariably leads to dodging trees, climbing mountains, and trying to avoid animals that jump out of nowhere. Besides protecting the radiator and engine from animal collisions, the undercarriage can see its fair share of damage, especially when that road less travelled looks too tempting to pass up. Bull bars deflect objects from underneath the vehicle like rocks and branches. It also protects the sump from ruts.

Passenger Protection

As bull bars provide more shock absorption, they offer better protection to the driver and passengers. By shielding the front end of your vehicle with heavy-duty steel in the event of a collision, chances are that the vehicle will still be operational afterwards. Quality bull bars are potentially a life-saving addition to any vehicle. This doesn’t mean that the airbags need to be removed.

Your Vehicle’s Survival Kit

For the off-road enthusiast that finds every rain or mud-soaked ditch a challenge that needs to be tackled, bull bars are designed to have survival add-ons like a sturdy winch and cable combo, as well as receiver receptors. Should the adventure embarked upon lead into the night or through the heavy mist, bull bars provide a strong enough base to mount auxiliary lights.
