Don’t Fall Victim to Smash and Grabs

Crime is on the rise, specifically those of opportunity. The biggest opportunistic crime out there is theft from vehicles. Through a combination of speed and distraction, more and more South Africans are becoming victims of this type of crime. So, what do you do to combat this? Through preventative measures, you need to take control of the situation and not become the latest statistic. Don’t fall victim to smash and grabs.

Steps to Prevent Smash-and-Grab Incidents

As a motorist, there are certain precautions that you can take to avoid being caught on the wrong side of smash-and-grab crime.

  1. Keep your doors locked at all times.

  2. Never open your windows when approached by street vendors or people handing out flyers.

  3. Do not leave any valuables in sight like handbags, cell phones, or laptops.

  4. Be conscious of your surroundings and remain alert at intersections and robots.

  5. Keep an eye out for obstacles in the road and do not stop and get out of your vehicle to remove them.

  6. Leave a gap, same as the driving gap rule, when you stop behind a vehicle – this will allow you enough space to pull away if something should happen.

  7. Look out for glass on the road – chances are that a smash and grab recently took place and the perpetrators could still be in the area.

  8. At night, slow down well in advance so that the robot changes to green by the time you reach the intersection.

  9. Keep your window open at approximately 3 to 5 cm whilst driving as it makes the glass more flexible and resistant against shattering if struck by a sharp object.

  10. Have your windows protected with smash-and-grab safety film.

Being vigilant and proactive will make a difference between being secure and a victim.

What is Smash-and-Grab Film?

This is a protective safety film that is pasted on vehicle windows to help prevent smash-and-grab incidents. The film is usually tinted, so it prevents people from seeing into the car and prevents the windows of your vehicle from shattering. Whilst the glass breaks, the protective film holds the pieces in place, which protects you from broken glass. This is not a “force field” that will stop a smash and grab from happening. It will, however, give you time to drive away safely.
