Professional Versus DIY Towbar Fitment

Time is precious, so why spend an entire weekend on a Saturday morning project when there are trained professionals who complete the task in just a couple of hours? Watching one or two YouTube videos on towbar fitment does not make one a seasoned expert and you will soon find out that the job is best left to those with 20 years’ worth of experience in the trade – Electronic Fitment Centre.

It All Starts with the Car

Unfortunately, not all makes of vehicles are deemed towable. Performance vehicles, sports vehicles, small run-arounds, and some model hybrid vehicles are not suitable candidates for your project. Seek advice from your local fitment centre if you are not sure.

A Few Steps that Need to be Followed for Your DIY Towbar Fitment

Here are a few steps to follow with a DIY fitment:

  1. Choose the type of towbar that you want fitted.

  2. Prepare your vehicle – you might have to remove your rear bumper. On some models, the exhaust has to be removed to get to the mounting holes in the chassis.

  3. Once the bumper has been removed, clean all surfaces and remove rubber covers.

  4. Install the main crossbar – this is where it gets tricky. This is vehicle specific as the bolt holes will be in different places, so follow the instructions.

  5. Attach the towball housing – installation of the housing depends on the type of towball chosen.

  6. Reattach the bumper and install the towball.

Before getting started, acquaint yourself with the step-by-step guidelines. Just winging it won’t cut it. Or simply change your mind and contact Electronic Fitment Centre to do the fitment for you.

You’re not finished yet – now it’s time for the wiring:

  1. Before you get started, disconnect the battery so that the work can be carried out safely

  2. Find your entry points

  3. Connect the electrical socket and the main cable

  4. Connect all the cables to the fuse box

  5. Once connected, tidy up the cables

  6. Now it’s time to test the connected lights and make sure they work

If you haven’t given up yet, then you are truly a DIY enthusiast that is prepared to sacrifice weekend sports for a towbar fitment.

A Costly Exercise

DIY towbar fitment is not only a safety concern, but it could cost you more money in the long run. Should the towbar you have purchased come with a manufacturer’s warranty, it will be voided by doing the work yourself.

The only thing you have to do is ask yourself this question: “Is all the work worth saving a few bucks?”
