Smash and Grab Fittings to Keep You Safe!

In this country, car crime is an everyday reality, and criminals employ various methods to gain access to vehicles quickly, in order to steal possessions in the car, such as laptops, handbags and cell phones.  One of the most popular methods employed is called “smash and grab” – where thieves break into the car while it is stationery, usually in traffic jams, by using a hard object to break the window, and then grab whatever is within reach.

By using this tactic, it gives them the advantage of surprise and they can make a quick getaway in between the remaining stationery vehicles.  The driver is usually unwilling to abandon the vehicle to run after the thieves, so the criminals tend to make a clean getaway.  They also tend to target cars with no passengers, as this could lead to the passenger assisting in the capture of the thieves.  There are a few things that you can to do avoid becoming another smash and grab statistic, and one of the most effective ways to prevent this type of theft is to have smash and grab fittings installed on your car.

How do Smash and Grab Fittings Work?

Usually, a window will shatter on impact, when it is struck by a hard object.  With smash and grab fittings, a safety film is fitted to the vehicle’s windows in the interior, which keeps the window together even if it is broken.  The film is so strong that it takes a while to hack through, in order to gain access, which removes the element of surprise during the attack and makes the criminal easier to catch.  Rather than risking being caught, criminals tend to avoid attacking the vehicles that have been fitted with this safety film.  If an attack does take place and the window is not broken, the criminal cannot immediately gain access to the vehicle, and this gives the driver a chance to take evasive actions.

Another advantage of smash and grab fittings is that they strengthen the windows and prevent them from shattering during a side impact, which means that passengers will not get injured by cut glass during an accident.  Most safety films also include the option to be tinted – this means that the interior of the car is not very visible, and therefore the criminal may not be sure of what the vehicle contains.  Criminals do not like surprises and a previously unnoticed passenger could cause big problems, so they tend to steer away from tinted car windows as well, leaving you even less at risk of being attacked.
