Speed Control Systems – A Feature That Should Be Found in All Vehicles

It’s the 21st century and it’s no secret that advancements in vehicle technology have made considerable headway over the past three decades. A machine that was once poor performing and uneconomical has now been transformed. Today, you can find self-driving cars, full multimedia audio solutions, touchscreen with navigation, smash and grab features designed to keep drivers and passengers safe, and cruise control systems at your fingertips. The problem is that while these features exist, they don’t come standard in vehicles.

At Electronic Fitment Centre, we’ve been fitting features such as the ones above for over 20 years, which is how we know exactly what our clients want, with one such feature being cruise control systems. Born out of the frustration of riding in a car driven by a lawyer who kept speeding up and slowing down as he talked, speed control systems, also known as cruise control, auto cruise, speedostat or tempomat is a system that automatically controls the speed of a motor vehicle.

Primarily suited for those who drive on a motorway or highway at a steady speed of at least 30mph, how these systems work is simple. Fitted onto the steering wheel or behind the steering wheel, the speed is set and the system keeps the speed consistent, even when the foot is removed from the accelerator. Easy to adjust, to initiate cruise control the driver simply accelerates to the desired speed, presses “Set” and the car will maintain its speed, without the use of the accelerator.

Often quite intimidating for those who have never used these systems before, cruise control is designed so that even a gentle tap of the brake pedal will shut it down. Once drivers become familiar with how this useful feature works, they often find its benefits invaluable. Doing so much more than just controlling the vehicle’s speed, speed/cruise control systems offer many other functions, such as the following:

  1. It allows the driver to maintain their speed limit and avoid speeding fines.

  2. It can make longer journeys more comfortable.

  3. It will improve fuel consumption and allow the driver to save money.

  4. Drivers can focus more on the road.

  5. It is known to reduce driving stress.

  6. It is user friendly.

Although speed control systems offer many benefits, this feature should not be used on winding roads, in heavy traffic, when approaching a bridge or overpass, on wet roads, late at night or when tired.
