Six Reasons Why You need Bull Bars

A bull bar was first named a “cowcatcher” and was originally designed for steam locomotives to, well, catch cows and remove them from the tracks before the poor animals caused frontal damage to the locomotive. Over time and with the development of the utility truck (or bakkie), the 4X4, and more recently, the sports utility vehicle (or SUV), this device has been reconstructed to fit these vehicles and renamed bull bars. Whether you just want to beef up your vehicle, or have it as protection, bull bars are a beneficial accessory to have.

1) Beefing it with Bulls

Principally designed for fitting onto vehicles that drive on mostly gravel farm tracks or off-road scenarios, the name, as with its predecessor, is sort of self-explanatory but also includes other livestock and wildlife. Although adding to the overall weight of the vehicle, the protection it offers when colliding with a half-ton of meat at varying speeds far exceeds the decrease in fuel economy.

2) Other Areas of Protection

Driving off-road and driving off-the-road are two entirely different things. Individuals who take their vehicles onto rarely travelled tracks, or entirely off the tracks, need more protection. They might encounter wildlife but usually, they need frontal protection from sticks, bushes, branches, and six-inch thorns.

3) What About the Belly?

Commonly made of steel or aluminium, these bars not only protect the front of the vehicle, the coolant system, and the engine well, but they also deflect objects under the vehicle like rocks, branches, and small boulders, and further protect the sump and undercarriage from rain-sink valleys and ruts.

4) Approach Angle Advantage

Only a driver that has done desert or serious dune driving will understand this particular benefit. Having that extra 200 to 300mm clearance on steeper landscapes prevents breakages of exposed plastic parts and components and prevents scratching against the ground terrain.

5) It’s like a Christmas Tree

You can attach all sorts of things from decently fitted bull bars. Its strong, rigid design is a great place to mount UHF antennas, a sand-marker or line-of-site flags, and even a good set of spotlights.

6) You Won’t be Left Stranded

Recovery of yours or your buddy’s vehicle is extremely important for survival out in the wild. Bull bars can harness a sturdy winch and cable combo, as well as retriever receptors. Make sure that you have these components. It will add to the value of the vehicle and make sure that you’re never stuck in the mud.
