Advice from the Towbar Fitment Experts
Fitting a towbar to your car is a great idea. If you need to tow a trailer for transporting goods or luggage, or you need it for towing a boat or caravan, a towbar is an essential piece of equipment for many people. A towbar additionally allows you to fit a bicycle rack, and will always be fitted with an electrical connection, so the taillights of the trailer or caravan can be connected to it. As is the case with any vehicle accessories, there are various options to choose from on the market. It is important to get professional advice to ensure that you select a towbar of the type that will meet your needs.
If you have just bought a new car and are lucky enough to have the towbar included in the deal, you are one of the fortunate ones. Many older vehicles and even new ones, are not fitted with a standard towbar and it is the owner’s responsibility to arrange fitment. There are of course a few factors to consider when choosing the right towbar for your vehicle, so it is always prudent to do some research first. We only fit top-quality, SABS-tested equipment, so have your towbar fitted at Electronic Fitment Centre.
Quality Matters
The towbar you have fitted to your vehicle must always be rated to tow the maximum weight your vehicle is allowed to tow by the manufacturer. In this way, you can be sure that the equipment is strong enough for any job. Never compromise on quality and have a towbar of unknown origins fitted. A failure can cause a serious accident and it is just not worth taking the chance.
Pick the Right Type
There are three typical towbar types available on the market:
Fixed-flange ball towbar – for towing trailers and caravans. The height of this towbar can be adjusted.
Detachable swan-neck towbar – this towbar can be removed when not in use, and some types’ attachment points are completely hidden behind the bumper, so with the tow ball removed, your car has that clean and uncluttered look, as if no towbar is fitted.
Fixed swan-neck towbar – this towbar has the same neck design as the previous one, except that it is permanently installed on the vehicle and cannot be detached.
Towbar Fitment Options
Considering how you will have the towbar fitted is important. Very few people have the equipment and expertise to fit a towbar to a vehicle and this is best left to the experts. The correct procedures must be followed in torqueing the bolts and connecting the electrical wires to the vehicle’s wiring loom, so we highly recommend that you let the professional team at Electronic Fitment Centre handle the installation for you.
