Some bakkies sold in South Africa are fitted with towbars as standard, but many are not. Professional towbar fitment is called for if you want to tow a caravan or trailer. Bakkies are large and heavy and are usually fitted with engines that develop plenty of torque. These characteristics make them ideal – and therefore popular – tow vehicles. With an off-road caravan hitched to it, a 4×4 double-cab bakkie can even reach some of the most remote campsites.
Most modern SUVs with their powerful engines are also ideal candidates for towbar fitment. However, despite the world seemingly being obsessed with SUVs, almost any car qualifies for towbar fitment, bar sports cars. However, tow ratings differ and, in some cases, a certain vehicle might not be certified for towing, so check before you buy. Most city runabouts, mid-range saloons, SUVs, and bakkies can be fitted with a towbar. Opting for towbar fitment makes your vehicle that much more practical, whether you want to fit a bicycle rack, tow a trailer to provide extra luggage space, or haul a caravan when on vacation.
Electronic Fitment Centre offers towbar fitment for your vehicle. Adding a towbar to your vehicle will allow you to reap many of the above-mentioned rewards. In fact, it would be impossible for a camper to go on holiday without a towbar fitted to a suitable tow vehicle to tow that camping trailer or caravan. As with mudguards and window tinting, towbars are usually available in several types and models, depending on your requirements.
We talked earlier about tow ratings and these are important. Every vehicle has a maximum tow rating and anything towed behind it is not allowed to be heavier than this specified weight. The manufacturer’s maximum towing capacity rating is the gross combination mass minus the gross vehicle mass. Most caravans and trailers are packed and heavy, which requires a heavy vehicle to safely and legally tow them. If the vehicle is too light or the trailer or caravan incorrectly packed, it can lead to an unstable and dangerous towing situation where the rear end of the vehicle is steered by the heavy cargo being pulled along. Towbar fitment is therefore recommended for larger and heavier vehicles if you intend to tow a big caravan.
